GRE Scores for MIS in US – Designed to help organisations gather and disseminate information, Master of Information Systems or Management Information Systems (MIS) has emerged as one of the top MS specialisations in the US in last few years.  Interestingly, the programme focuses on the actual business aspects of scientific information management in an organization. Being an interdisciplinary course, MIS, essentially, involves application of information technology to managerial strategies. So, career opportunities in this field can be explored, primarily, in businesses engaged in e-commerce organisations and consultancies among others where MIS graduates can enjoy positions as systems consultants, analysts or engage in auditing and networking. MIS also has multiple disciplines such as Business Information Management, IT strategy, Information Technology, Telecom Management etc.

Being one of its most sought after MS specialisations in the US, especially, among international students; the USA has some of the best universities for MIS in the World.  Some of the popular names would be Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California – Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon University and Purdue University among others. The MIS programme is open to students from all background. However, the class profiles of the universities suggest that majority of the students come from Computer science background followed by business. For eg, an average 47% of the MIS class of Carnegie Mellon University in the three years pursued Computer Science in their undergraduation.

While MIS, itself, is an interdisciplinary course, most of the universities offer it as an MS course i.e Master of Science. As such, majority of the universities accept GRE scores for MIS in US. While the average accepted in the top universities in US range within 155-165, most of the universities have a higher cut off in the Quantitative section.

GRE or Graduate Record Examination is an international standardised test accepted for admission to graduate various programmes at many universities across the globe, especially in USA.  Conducted by ETS, the GRE Test measures the candidate’s verbal, quantitative, critical thinking and analytical writing skills covered in three main sections — Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing.

A computer based test, GRE takes 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete and test takers are scored within the range of 130-170.

 

In addition to the GRE revised general test, there are 7 subject tests in GRE that evaluate candidates’ knowledge in their respective field. Subject tests are subjective in nature and is an in depth assessment of the student in a field. However, most of the universities offering MIS accept just GRE general test scores. If a university does, require, however, it is most likely to ask for the candidate’s GRE Mathematics subject test score.
